Get To Know Me: Engineering Edition!
What’s Your Favorite Engineering Memory/Experience?
I actually didn’t apply to Tufts as an engineer. When I submitted my Early Decision application in late October of 2018, I was sure I was going to be a Biology major in the School of Arts & Sciences. However, in my first few weeks as freshman at Tufts, I was intrigued by the School of Engineering. I decided to submit an Internal Transfer application, and it was by far one of the best decisions I have ever made.
During my first semester, I worked alongside Eliza Yuen who helped guide my Internal Transfer process. I completed three mandatory classes which I absolutely loved: Chemistry with Professor Sergiy Kryatov, Calculus with Professor Nariel Monteiro, and Applications in Engineering: Introduction to Biomedical Engineering with Professor David Kaplan & Professor Fiorenzo Omenetto. These classes helped open my world to what I could do & accomplish if I chose to pursue a career in Engineering. I was also constantly surrounded by hardworking & dedicated engineers within the Tufts community who all inspired & motivated me to continue down this path and eventually complete my transfer process!
While it was a long & tough journey, on January 14th of 2020, I was officially admitted into the School of Engineering! I remember opening the “Congrats!” email from Eliza after landing in Boston finishing an 18 hour flight from Singapore. My entire Internal Transfer process from start to finish was by far one of my favorite engineering experiences I will never forget.
What’s Your Favorite Extracurricular Activity on Campus?
One of my favorite extracurricular activities at Tufts is the Singapore Indonesia Malaysia Student Association (also known as SIMSA)! As a freshman, I was super lucky to be on their E-Board as Co-Logistics Chair, and I had an amazing time bonding & getting to know everyone within the culture club. As an international student, it was really important for me to be able to find a community that I could rely on at Tufts. I’m so grateful to be a part of SIMSA, and I had such a great time planning cultural events & organizing bondings this past year.
What Are Some of Your Favorite Spots?
Favorite spots on campus: Prez Lawn & the SEC.
Favorite spots in Boston: Newbury Street & Boston Commons
Favorite spots in David Square: Pokeworks & Kung Fu Tea :)
What’s Your Must-Have Tool on Campus?
The Dual Pocket Slim Silicone Phone Wallet! They sell these at the Tufts Bookstore (highly recommend)! These are super convenient for keeping your Tufts ID, credit card & extra cash at the back of your phone, and they stick right onto your phone case.
